Overview AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages. It is built on top of existing web technologies to enable super fast page rendering and content delivery. The AMP Project is an open-source initiative aiming to make the web better for all users. The project enables the creation of websites and ads that are consistently fast, beautiful, and high-performing across devices and distribution platforms. Web pages and ads published in the AMP format load near instantly, giving users a smooth, more engaging experience on mobile and desktop.
Examples The Google AMP Project is currently being used by The Washington Post, WompMobile, and Teads. The Washington Post is a newspaper that has won 47 Pulitzer Prizes, WompMobile is a company that works to make existing websites responsive, and Teads is a company that specializes in native video advertising.
Uses Google AMP has three main components: 1) AMP HTML is HTML with some restrictions for reliable performance. It is basically HTML extended with custom AMP properties. 2) The AMP JS library ensures the fast rendering of AMP HTML pages. It implements all of AMP's best performance practices, manages resource loading and gives the custom tags mentioned above, all to ensure a fast rendering of a web page. 3) The Google AMP Cache is a proxy-based content delivery network for delivering all valid AMP documents. It fetches AMP HTML pages, caches them, and improves page performance automatically.
Opinion Today, the expectation is that content should load super fast and be easy to explore. The reality is that content can take several seconds to load, or, because the user abandons the slow page, never fully loads at all. Accelerated Mobile Pages are web pages designed to load near instantaneously -- they are a step towards a better mobile web for all. Making websites responsive is one of the most important areas of Web Development. There is some criticism with AMP, however. The content loads off Google's own server, not the website itself. It turns Google into a portal, in other words. A portal that you never leave. And it is coming from the most successful and profitable advertising company in the world, making skeptics wonder if Google AMP is beneficial.
Internet of Things
Overview The Internet of Things IoT is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity which enables these to connect and exchange data. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing Internet infrastructure. The term "the Internet of things" was coined by Kevin Ashton of Procter and Gamble, in 1999.
Examples Many consumer items are connected to the Internet and most of us have several devices in our homes already. Examples include connected car, home entertainment system, wearble technologies, connected health devices, and appliances such as washer/dryers, robotic vacuums, air purifiers, ovens, or refrigerators/freezers that use Wi-Fi for remote monitoring. Commercial uses include agriculture, energy management, and transportation.
Uses The smart home is likely the most popular IoT application at the moment because it is the one that is most affordable and readily available to consumers. This can be seen in devices like Amazon Echo. Smartwatches on the market have turned our wrists into smartphone holsters by enabling text messaging, phone calls, and more. Fitbit is an example of a wearble. The IoT has the potential to transform entire cities by solving real problems citizens face each day. With the proper connections and data, the Internet of Things can solve traffic congestion issues and reduce noise, crime, and pollution. The Spanish city is one of Barcelona is the foremost smart city in the world after it implemented several IoT initiatives. Starting in 2012, the city deployed responsive technologies across urban systems including public transit, parking, street lighting, and waste management.
Opinion The Internet of Things has been around for over a decade, but it is more important now than ever due to how fast technology is growing and everyone has a desire for inter-connectivity. This makes the concept of the Internet of Things one of the most important trends of 2018.
